St. Paul Peterson, a teenage wunderkind who performed keys with The Time in Purple Rain before signing to Prince’s Paisley Park label as lead singer of The Family (‘Nothing Compares 2 U’), is acknowledged as one of the best musicians to emerge from the Twin Cities.
St Paul (as named by Prince) has assembled the "who's who" of the Minnesota music scene into a band called The Minneapolis Funk All Stars.
The chart-topping, synth-heavy pulse that came out of the Twin Cities has been credited as one of the most vital R&B movements of the past 30 years. Popularized by Prince’s mega hit movie ‘Purple Rain’ and its accompanying soundtrack ‘The Minneapolis Sound’ became a musical juggernaut that spawned hits from artists such as The Time, Vanity 6, Morris Day, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Sheila E, Jody Watley, The Jets, Ready For The World and many more. Musicians in this ensemble include the rhythm section of St. Paul Peterson on Bass and Vocals (The Time, The Family),

Kirk Johnson on drums (Prince and the NPG), Elisa Fiorillo on vocals (Prince and the NPG), Jellybean Johnson on guitar (The Time/The Family/fDeluxe, Oliver Leiber on guitar (Tamara and the Scene/Jesse Johnson) and Jason Peterson DeLaire on sax, vocals and keys (Carmen Electra/Solo)

About the Band

St. Paul Peterson -The Time, The Family/fDeluxe -Bass/Lead Vocals

Prince discovered Paul Peterson, aka “St Paul,” at the age of 17. He enlisted him as a keyboard player in “The Time” for the movie “Purple Rain.” Paul took the lead vocalist spot in the Prince produced group “The Family” before becoming a solo artist and scoring hits for MCA and Atlantic Records. St. Paul has recorded, toured or written with Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, Daryl Hall, Prince, George Benson, Oleta Adams, The Corrs, Kenny Loggins, and Morris Day and The Time to name a few. Paul tours with his band, "St Paul and the Minneapolis Funk All Stars," consisting of musicians and producers who helped to create the Minneapolis Sound.

Kirk Johnson – Prince and the NPG Drummer
As an active member of Paisley Park Studios since 1990, Kirk has been involved in almost all aspects of Prince's musical journey from the 90's to the present. Starting as a dancer and choreographer for NPG, Kirk soon moved over to the production side in 1993. During this time, he also created Kitchen Records where he could record his own music and the music of artists such as TKO, Walter Chancellor, Jr., BKS and Fonky Bald Heads. It wasn't until 1996 that he took over the drumchair for Prince and appeared on releases such as Diamonds and Pearls (percussion), The Gold Experience (programming), Symbol, Chaos & Disorder, Emancipation (drums & production), Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, and The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale.

Oliver Leiber – Jesse Johnson and Tamara and the Scene Guitarist (producer of Paula Abdul's huge hits)
Producer and songwriter Oliver Leiber's first big success came when he produced Paula Abdul's first album, "Forever Your Girl." Selling between ten and twelve million copies worldwide, Leiber's songwriting prowess, demonstrated by writing the hit singles "Opposites Attract" "It's Just The Way That You Love Me" and "Forever Your Girl".

Jason Peterson DeLaire – Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis Camp, Carmen Electra keyboards
Jason is a member of the well-known musical “Peterson Family” of Minneapolis, MN. He is an “in demand” Saxophonist and Keyboardist, as well as being a talented singer, songwriter and producer. Elisa Fiorillo - vocalist with Prince and the NPG
She met Prince while working at Paisley Park on her second album with David Z.. Prince asked her to sing on Partyman (The Purple Party Mix) and on several The Time songs on the band’s reunion album from 1990 Pandemonium and on Graffiti Bridge. In 1990 she released her second album I Am, largely written and produced by Prince. After spending two decade focusing on her own career, Elisa returned to Prince’s camp in 2009 and toured with him as backup singer in The NPG ensemble.

About the opener: Purple Funk Metropolis

Purple Funk Metropolis is a charismatic seven-piece instrumental band with a raw sound inspired by soul, jazz, funk, and more. Their origins trace back to jazz classes at the University of Minnesota, where Andrew Tomten (Bandleader and saxophone) met Alex Browne (trumpet), Sam Rosenstone (keys), Tarek Abdelqader (drums), and Andy Schupp (bass). Various iterations of bands and musical projects developed until the group, with the addition of Alex Graves (guitar) recorded their first EP Morsels in 2017 under the name Purple Funk Metropolis. The band has continually been performing, recording, and rehearsing since, which has allowed for their sound to mature and evolve. The addition of Evan Slack (guitar) to the group in 2019 added a new level of live energy and allowed for more dense arrangements of tunes old and new. Whether in a Como basement or a downtown dive bar, PFM's energy notoriously gets the whole room dancing.
The new album The Golden Goose is out now.
